Creating a “Third Space” at TNC

For over 60 years, Tenafly Nature Center’s bucolic woods have offered a quiet respite from the everyday bustle, along with opportunities to learn, grow, and just be in nature. Most recently, the pandemic challenged us to consider what matters most so we could adapt and cope with unexpected and unwelcome change. For many, it brought on or deepened feelings of sadness, loneliness and isolation, creating a cross-generational loneliness epidemic.

TNC is actively addressing this epidemic by offering opportunities for people to gather at TNC, creating a “third space” away from home or work, where people can connect with and in nature. This summer, TNC partnered with the Community Chest of Englewood to offer Natural Connections, a new, FREE program for adult nature-lovers and birders.

In fall, TNC will build on its work with seniors by partnering with the Tenafly Senior Center to host a 10-session series of 90-minute programs at TNC. Each session will feature a fun and interesting presentation, a related activity, and free time to socialize, connect and “play” with other participants. Topics will include favorites such as raptors, apple cider making, maple sugaring, and wild edibles, and will be presented by TNC’s Environmental Educators as well as guest presenters.

Often, caregivers of young children feel isolated at home, having little interaction with other adults and perhaps, fewer opportunities to connect and make friends. Now entering its second year, Family Forest School offers children ages 18 months to 3.5 years and their caregivers opportunities to engage with the natural world and each other through fun, nature-based, weekly “playdates” at TNC. In its first year, Family Forest School was offered two days per week, with seasonal, 6-week sessions serving children and adults throughout Bergen County. Due to its success and high demand, TNC will expand the program, increasing to three days per week in each six-week session.

If you or anyone you know needs a space to reconnect with others please consider a visit to TNC.
