Service Projects

Looking for a meaningful service project? Tenafly Nature Center offers a variety of community service opportunities perfect for Scout projects or awards. These hands-on projects not only benefit the center but also help you earn recognition while making a lasting impact on the environment and visitors. Whether you’re interested in building, creating, or educating, there’s a project for everyone.

All projects must be planned in consultation with and approved by a Tenafly Nature Center staff member.

Ongoing Service Day Opportunities Include:

    Invasive Plant Removal to improve biodiversity within the preserve.

    Assist with Land Projects help mulch the trails and other necessary continuous elements needed within the preserve.
Current Service Project Opportunities Include:

    Building Boardwalks to improve accessibility in wetland areas within the preserve.
  • greensections_bullets
    Creating a Welcome Kiosk at one of our alternative park entrances, similar to the existing one near the main parking lot.

    Designing Artistic Trail Elements to encourage visitor photography and appreciation of nature.

    Constructing a Fairy Trail Repair Station for volunteers to store and build fairy houses.

    Building an Interactive Wildlife Exhibit that highlights the movement of TNC’s native wildlife and their habitats.

    Creating a Little Free Puzzle Library for community members to share jigsaw puzzles, promoting stress relief and community bonding.

    Constructing Pollinator-Friendly Habitat Walls at various locations throughout the preserve to support local wildlife.

    Installing Birdwatching Elements around Pfister’s Pond to enhance the birdwatching experience.

    Designing Donation Collection Receptacles that engage visitors and encourage contributions to support TNC’s mission.

    Creating Upcycled Animal Statues or Art Pieces to raise awareness about the importance of reducing, reusing, and recycling.

    Building Specialized Storage Elements for program participants to store outdoor gear and personal items.

    Designing Educational Signs to be placed around Pfister’s Pond to teach visitors about the local ecosystem.

Past Eagle Scout and Gold Award Projects Over the Last 10 Years
Thanks to the efforts of these individuals, our nature center will be a more pleasurable place to visit and to educate the public.

Created a welcome kiosk at one of TNC’s alternate entrances.

Created a pollinator friendly habitat at entrance to TNC around the welcome sign

Renovated the Forest School mud kitchen area

Planned and installed a restoration area for the propagation of native plants along the white trail

Created the first of several fenced restoration areas for the propagation of native plants around the old main trail.

Constructed a human sized interactive eagle nest for educational purposes.

Constructed 6 nature themed corn hole boards and an interactive display

Created an educational tree identification display for learners of all ages

Renovated the classroom on red trail, including the building of 8 benches

Rebuilt the boardwalk along The Main Trail by Pfister’s Pond and installed several signs

Built a canoe rack and enriched the biodiversity of Pfister’s Pond by installing 4 native plant islands

Built an education display on the yellow trail and a little free library the main trail

built a new bridge from the Red trail to the Purple Trail

built boardwalks along the Haring Rock and Seely trails

repaired the Floating Dock on the Yellow Trail

replaced a bridge on the Allison and Little Chism Trail

built new boardwalks for part of the Bischoff Trail

constructed an outdoor play area on the Yellow Trail

built footboards for the main trail next to the pond
