Looking for a meaningful service project? Tenafly Nature Center offers a variety of community service opportunities perfect for Scout projects or awards. These hands-on projects not only benefit the center but also help you earn recognition while making a lasting impact on the environment and visitors. Whether you’re interested in building, creating, or educating, there’s a project for everyone.
All projects must be planned in consultation with and approved by a Tenafly Nature Center staff member.

Invasive Plant Removal to improve biodiversity within the preserve.

Assist with Land Projects help mulch the trails and other necessary continuous elements needed within the preserve.
Land & Facilities Based Projects

Boardwalks Build structures to improve accessibility in wetland areas within the preserve.

Habitat Restoration erecting fencing, removing invasive plant species and planting native plants and accompanying signage.

Fencing and Screening plant and install fencing to demarcate educational spaces in the preserve.

GIS Mapping Use a GPS to pinpoint and map invasive speices and other areas of ecological importance.

Pollinator-Friendly Habitat Walls Construct walls at various locations throughout the preserve to support local pollinator wildlife. (part habitat/part art installation)

Welcome Kiosk Construct a kiosk at one of our alternative park entrances, similar to the existing one near the main parking lot.
Education & Visitor Engagement Based Projects

Photo Cutout Trail Elements Design several elements to encourage visitor photography and appreciation of nature.

Little Free Puzzle Library Create additional self guided activities for community members to share (ex. jigsaw puzzles), promoting stress relief and community bonding.

Donation Collection Receptacles Create donation opportunities that engage visitors and encourage contributions to support TNC’s mission.

Interactive Wildlife Exhibit Build an exhibit or two that highlights the movement of TNC’s native wildlife and their habitats.

Faerie Trail Repair Station Construct a space for volunteers to store and build faerie houses.

Geocaching Trail Develop a series of educational geocaches for visitors to the preserve to engage and learn from.

Geolocating Self Guided Trail design educational stops including photographic images and informational background for a phone based self-guided trail.

Pond Educational Signs Design and create educational signage to be placed around Pfister’s Pond to teach visitors about the local ecosystem.

Upcycled Animal Statues Create art installations made from recycled items to raise awareness about the importance of reducing, reusing, and recycling.

Birdwatching Elements Install tools and elements around Pfister’s Pond to enhance the birdwatching experience.

replaced a bridge on the Allison and Little Chism Trail
built new boardwalks for part of the Bischoff Trail
constructed an outdoor play area on the Yellow Trail
built footboards for the main trail next to the pond
